While some European countries have long-established systems for collecting and utilizing biogenic residues, this value chain is still in development in the region.

This represents a significant opportunity for businesses. In the region olive-, chicken or fish farms produce significant amounts of well separated biogenic waste (see "understand" section for indicative figures). At the same time these and other businesses as well as households have and increasing and unsatisfied need for energy, animal feed or organic fertilizer. Additionally governments and businesses are pushing towards higher sustainability standards in need of reducing the amounts of waste going to landfills as well as a clean and healthy environment in a region that is becoming a tourism hotspot.
